Its a pipe dream that we can eradicate this thing. There will be calls to lockdown but as long as vaccines work with some efficiency, I don't see the govt locking down as we have done. It will be difficult to govern, working out what is acceptable deaths wise but sadly we have to accept that people will die from this and it's another cause of death that will live amongst us.
To some, probably a few reading this, will find that distasteful but locking down 2 or 3 times a year simply isn't sustainable and will cause far more pain that it stops.
I have not been against lockdown. I have suffered personally from losing people close. But you simply cannot just keep kicking the negative effects of lockdown can down the road before we suffer implosion far worse than covid.
Totally agree Rich. Great post.
My distrust of the government comes from the ever moving goalposts. Back to normal by Xmas, then Easter, then summer, now 2022 being suggested. Vaccines for freedom, now vaccines and two tests a week and it might still not be enough. I don’t understand that. The vaccines stop serious cases in a huge proportion, and a huge proportion of serious cases were already in over 50s. A huge proportion of these have had vaccines. If this isn’t enough, combined with a decent uptake on the under 50s (which there will be), we are fucked. And I mean fucked.
I believe if there’s lockdowns in the autumn there will be riots. I’m not joking. And I believe this is one of the significant reasons they’re trying to get the Bill through parliament to come down harder on protests/riots. I believe the government are expecting chaos.
Many people think we’re on the home straight. I hope they’re right and I’m wrong, genuinely. I believe the chaos hasn’t even started yet. Sorry for the pessimism. Just my gut feeling. I really really hope I’m wrong.
Where we probably disagree, is that the govt will lockdown again. I don't think they will. Some restrictions at most. I believe that vaccines will work well enough for the NHS to cope. There will be calls to lockdown if it gets stretched and people are dying but that's absolutely no different to every winter. The acceptance that people will die is a bridge we have yet to cross.
The vaccines certainly should work well enough for the nhs to cope. That was the aim, protecting the nhs. I feel some people have lost sight of that and reducing covid at all costs has taken over. My suspicion comes from the ever moving goalposts from the government, but I hope you’re right about lockdowns as they simply can’t continue.
