Length of contract does play a part, but yes, it is laughable.
I wouldn't take Murphy on a free. He will expect Newcastle wages, and he isn't worth it. Gayle is probably worth decent wages, tbf.

Completely agree that SR’s contract will have a part to play, but Gibbs and Livermore have time to run yet.
The new, slimmer Rondon would tear this division apart, it’d be worth risking him leaving on a free for a season at this level under a manager who knows how to keep him lean and play to his strengths!
Murphy has been a huge disappointment - the move to Newcastle seems to have gone to his head and it’s as if he feels he’s too good for this division and doesn’t have to remotely try!

If that story is correct and based on performances to date, Murphy would have a value of about 25p in that deal.
