MOT advice... - baggpuss - 07-21-2020

Anybody on here know what the latest is?
Last I knew that if it was due during lockdown then you got an amnesty until Sept but I am told that may have changed.

There was technically not a reason why you couldn't get an MOT during lockdown. The garages and MOT stations were still open.

I'd shuggest booking it in sharpish to avert any undue attention.

If it's due after August 1st 2020 then you need to arrange the test as normal, if it's due between 30th March-31st July 2020 then you have a 6 month extension.

6months extra from if after march 31st. Think it was for 3 months. They admitted later it was a bad idea.

I heard insurers not happy about it and are checking cars if in an accident.
I still got mine done as there will be a mad rush come October.

if the MOT was/is due before 31st July then you get a 6 month extension, but can choose to get an MOT done. If it is due after 1st August then you must get it done by the due date.

you must keep your vehicle road worthy though in any event

Get onto gov.uk "Is my car MOT'd" webpage and put your reg in. It will tell you when your MOT runs out.

(Scratches head and wonders "Don't people know this stuff? It was so much more difficult when I first had a car 45 years ago")

Ah good - this applies to me.
Thanks!

I think if you're signed up for the automatic gov.uk reminders you'll get one in advance of the revised renewal date.

If it was in Lockdown you get 6 months extra, but can get it done before then if you want. If it's on / after Aug 1st then it's as normaly. Mine is now due on Dec 1 instead of June 1.

There are a few things to bear in mind though.
Insurance companies are far from on board with this and are likely to dig in should something happen which could have been discovered in an MOT.
There is also still both a legal and moral responsibility to ensure our vehicles are roadworthy.
Garages are gearing up for an avalanche of MOT tests and in all likelihood will be booked up early, plus they are less likely to take on any extra (or more time consuming repairs). Obviously this may lead to people not being able to use their vehicles.
