Worst case scenario

What should we do instead? Lockdown?

Yes, because the choice is as binary as pretty much no restrictions or lockdown! Time will tell if Wales or Scotland do better over the next couple of months. I suspect they will.

So where are there ‘pretty much’ no restrictions then?

We already have to wear masks in more places, are advised to take quick tests if we are visiting people, advised to work from home if possible and vaccine passports are required for certain venues. In addition a number of events have been cancelled without the need for Government intervention.

So what extra restrictions would you impose which would allow the country, economy and people to carry on which may not have an effect to people off work by greater than 25%

For what it’s worth despite more sanctions having been  in force for longer by Wales, N Ireland and Scotland only Scotland has slightly less cases per 100,000 in the most recent 7 day figures.

Partial lockdown/restrictions seem to have little effect on Omnicron.

Worldwide daily deaths seem to be half what they were a year ago. The severity of covid appears to be waning, maybe have the vulnerable shield and everyone else stop long isolating and go to work after 3 - 5 days to ensure enough people are at work and trial this approach in 1-2 weeks time once the fall out if any from Xmas and New year has settled down?

I'm also reading some experts suggesting that Lockdown won't make the pandemic any lighter, it will just stretch it out a bit more (which could ease the burden on NHS and other sectors). The problem is that immunity wanes after 10 weeks from the booster, so more of the elderly could end up hospitalised if we stretch it too far.

The policy seems to be to let Omicron spread quickly, as it did in South Africa, and blow it's way through asap. Whether this is the work of a genius or an idiot, only time will tell.

This, very much this.

However I'm not convinced that it was as much planned as dithering and lack of any plan at government level.

The policy seems to be based on what his backbenchers (Covid Recovery Group) tell him he can do.

Another press conference today. Wonder what this one is about?

RE: UK Covid death toll - baggy1 - 01-04-2022

It'll be interesting to see what todays hospital numbers are seeing as we have had the fastest rate of hospitalisations since this all began over the last week. Numbers have doubled since Christmas day.

This is a good, balanced thread around situation in hospitals.

Thanks for that Rich, I might even get back onto twitter if those are the threads that are on there these days.
